Friendsgiving 2018

Life happens.

Circumstances change, and it is the inevitability of change that remains the only constant in life, as a wise friend once told me. There almost couldn’t be anything quite truer than this single statement alone, and it’s when you’re able to come to terms with this truth and truly appreciate the idea that change is a vital component of simply living, I feel, that you’ll finally be at peace with yourself, your surroundings, and the present state you find yourself in.

Maybe I’m just trying to console myself, and if you’re in a state of tumultuous and unsteady times you’ll feel as though I’m reaching a hand out to you, too. But sometimes we just need to regain some steady ground in an unsteady world that’s literally always spinning at an incredible speed… but it’s times like these where I wholeheartedly appreciate being able to slow down—to almost a complete standstill. This Friendsgiving, I stood in my kitchen, in the background, and took a look around me. I was surrounded by a group of some of the most genuine people I know. We’re all battling our own demons, yet we continue to find time to laugh together, to listen to one another, and to be blessed with the time to slow down with each and every one of them is all I could really ask for.

We played host this year for Friendsgiving, and while our setup was definitely not as elaborate as our Friendsgiving 2017, it was still some quality time well spent.

As always, we had way too much food and alcohol for the number of people that were actually there so there were plenty of leftovers for another full family of 6… but better too much than too little.

Our feast included honey baked ham, honey baked turkey breast, cheddar and ham scalloped potatoes, creamed corn, mashed potatoes, avocado chicken salad, bacon-wrapped asparagus, and cheddar biscuits.

Our appetizer included an assortment of brie, cambozola, and cranberry stilton with prosciutto and salami.

If you’re looking for a quick holiday drink, cranberry apple cider and vodka makes a great substitute for your typical cranberry vodka! Other than that, we had our usual whiskey and bourbon on hand, as well as a full keg of Bell’s Two Hearted currently on tap.

And onto dessert, we stuffed our faces with red velvet cake, caramel apple pie with vanilla ice cream, and a freaking S’MORES BAR.

To burn off our food coma, we played some card games… this year, Word Mines and What Do You Meme supplied the inappropriate laughs :)

Then after taking 10 million attempts at a good photo, we took a few last minute shots because why not. 🥃

And that was the end of our Friendsgiving, yet only the beginning of a week-long marathon of eating.

We spent the rest of the weekend being potatoes on the couch, binge watching the new Netflix DOG series, eating leftovers, and enjoying every minute of it.

I know I’ve been extra quiet on the social media front these past few months, but to be honest I feel a lot better for it. And really, maybe society as a whole could use a little social media detox… but that’s a Black Mirror episode all in itself.
